Company History
Bon Secours Mercy Health traces its roots to two faith-based health ministries founded more than a century ago, each guided by a deep commitment to compassionate service and care for the underserved.
Bon Secours Health System was established in 1824 in Paris, France, by the Sisters of Bon Secours. The order expanded its ministry to the United States in the late 19th century, opening its first American hospital in Baltimore in 1919. Over the decades, Bon Secours grew into a respected health system known for community-based care, particularly in underserved and vulnerable populations.
Mercy Health was founded in 1986 through the unification of multiple ministries sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, whose health care mission began in Dublin, Ireland, in 1831. Mercy Health expanded rapidly across the Midwest and South, developing a comprehensive network of hospitals, physician practices, outpatient services, and post-acute care while maintaining a strong focus on innovation, quality, and population health.
In 2018, Bon Secours Health System and Mercy Health joined together to form Bon Secours Mercy Health, creating one of the largest Catholic health care systems in the United States. The merger unified two organizations with shared values, complementary geographic footprints, and a common mission to improve health outcomes while advancing compassionate, faith-based care.
Today, Bon Secours Mercy Health serves millions of patients annually across multiple states through an integrated continuum of care that includes acute care hospitals, urgent care and outpatient facilities, primary and specialty practices, home health, hospice, and virtual care services. Building on more than 150 years of collective history, the organization continues to evolve—embracing innovation, advancing health equity, and strengthening communities—while remaining firmly grounded in its mission-driven heritage.
